In May of 2022 a new ocean water test was implemented for Coronado’s beaches which resulted in a dramatic increase in closures. Here’s the problem, San Diego City data collected over the last two years shows 99% of the bacteria can be dead and harmless by the time it floats from the Mexico-USA border to the Silver Stand State Beach. But the new test can’t tell the difference between dead and live bacteria which leads to false positive test results closing Coronado’s beaches.
The CA Department of Health developed State Regulations. They calculated a ddPCR 1413 copies of DNA per 100ml is equal to a culture based test of 104 bacteria per 100ml. Why don’t the numbers at the Silver Strand State Beach add up?
